  1. Can you review the "No alignment available" topic and its implications?

The “No alignment available” designation in the PMDR framework applies to portfolio companies that are in sectors or geographies where, at present, there’s no viable technological pathway to reach net zero. These are companies that, despite perhaps taking initial steps toward decarbonization, cannot yet align due to systemic or sectoral constraints—like limited access to low-carbon alternatives or lack of decarbonization infrastructure.

Rather than penalizing these companies, the PMDR framework accounts for this reality by classifying them as preparing to decarbonize. This approach enables investors to acknowledge the constraints while still tracking progress and engagement efforts over time. It’s a pragmatic and transparent way to demonstrate forward motion even in hard-to-abate sectors.
  1. Does the software communicate with the MIndSoft platform? or is it necessary to fill / import data to Persefoni?

Currently, Persefoni does not have a direct integration with MindSoft. However, data can be imported into Persefoni through a variety of flexible formats—whether via direct file upload (e.g., Excel, CSV), through integrations with systems like ERPs, or with support from Persefoni’s Concierge and Customer Success teams.
    • For portfolio companies that lack centralized systems or have fragmented data across teams, Persefoni’s platform helps guide users through the data collection process. This includes estimating missing data in accordance with GHG Protocol standards and tracking the source, assumptions, and confidence level of each data point. Many customers start with estimates and improve data quality over time as systems mature.
  2. How do you protect the data and sensitivity to leaks?

Persefoni is built with enterprise-grade security. We encrypt all data at rest and in transit, follow strict access controls, and continuously monitor our systems. Our platform is hosted on AWS with multiple layers of protection and is certified against leading standards like SOC 1 & 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and CSA STAR Level 2 Gold.

We also follow a shared security model—while we secure the platform infrastructure, customers control access to their data.

You can read more about our security practices and certifications at www.persefoni.com/documents/security
  1. What kind of internal capabilities should a company develop to measure their carbon footprint more accurately?

Companies should begin by assembling a small internal team or committee, since the data needed to calculate a carbon footprint typically comes from multiple sources, such as finance, facilities, and operations. Many companies, especially smaller ones, may not have dedicated sustainability teams or even facilities managers. That’s why Onyx chose Persefoni, which is built for non-experts. The platform provides hands-on guidance, particularly during a company’s first reporting cycle, meeting weekly to help them locate and structure their data. While the first carbon footprint is often the most challenging, the process gets easier over time. In Onyx’s experience working with about 22 companies on Persefoni, all of them found the process more manageable than expected, often saying it wasn’t nearly as bad as they thought it would be.
  1. How does Persefoni help companies that don’t have complete data during their first carbon footprint?

The most important step is simply to get started. Companies often hesitate due to incomplete data, but Persefoni supports organizations by identifying what is material to their reporting goals and advising on the best available data points to use. While primary data is ideal, it may not always be accessible, especially in year one. In those cases, Persefoni helps estimate emissions using GHG Protocol-aligned methodologies, such as using modeled building energy data or extrapolating from similar assets. The platform tracks who is responsible for each data source, annotates where estimates are used, and helps companies plan for improved data collection over time. We do recognize that Scope 3 data can be particularly difficult, so we guide companies to start with procurement or spend data to identify hotspots. For GPs, Persefoni can engage directly with portfolio companies, helping normalize the process and centralize data across dozens of investments, allowing firms to track progress consistently and efficiently.

  2. What are best practices for building data literacy within your team, especially once you have the data?

Once carbon emissions data is available, teams should start by benchmarking both across peer companies and within their own portfolio. This comparison helps teams understand whether their data falls within expected ranges and identify outliers. It is recommended to leverage visual tools like the PMDR alignment scale and emissions-vs-vintage bubble charts as helpful ways to prioritize where to focus decarbonization efforts. Typically, GPs see the most success by concentrating on high-emitting companies that are newer to the portfolio, as these offer the most time and opportunity to drive real change. In addition to benchmarking, teams should also explore decarbonization strategies and scenario modeling to turn data into actionable insights. Persefoni’s Net Zero Navigator, for example, offers a library of emissions-reduction levers to help teams play out different reduction pathways. Ultimately, building data literacy means using comparisons, visualizations, and real-world modeling to guide action, not just collecting data for its own sake.

Why Persefoni? (Decarbonizing the Private Markets)

Before Persefoni, it was not feasible for an asset manager to report a carbon intensity figure to their investors, nor was it feasible for those investors to make decisions on the allocation of capital according to carbon intensity.
