Overview
In theory, measuring your GHG emissions is straightforward. Data is collected, multiplied by an emission factor, and you get an emission estimation. However, in practice, a lot of work has to be completed beforehand to ensure data is gathered accurately and completely from internal and external sources. Furthermore, organizations might not always be able to get the whole picture from their suppliers. Estimations may be needed in the face of missing information.
It is important to note that a best practice within data estimation involves enhancing and expanding the process year over year to achieve greater completeness progressively. Organizations should assess their biggest gaps and work to create a plan with their suppliers to improve the estimation of data before the next year’s emission calculations. Over the long run, ensuring complete and accurate data enables organizations to gain valuable insights across their value chain and reduction efforts.
